Presidential committee criticizes Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem for leasing church land from Israeli municipality


RAMALLAH, Thursday, September 23, 2021 (WAFA) – Faced with fierce Israeli attempts to Judaize occupied Jerusalem, Ramzi Khoury, head of the High Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine, addressed a letter to Catholicos Karekin II, the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, concerning the Armenian Quarter, located inside the Old City of East Jerusalem which is part of the occupied territories to which international resolutions apply, noting that he had previously sent two letters to the Patriarch of the ‘Armenian Orthodox Church in Jerusalem, Nourhan Manougian, seeking clarification on the Armenian Patriarchate leasing the land known as Cow’s Garden to the Israeli occupation municipality which seeks to change the historical and geographic character of the neighborhood, which belongs to the people Palestinian of Armenian origin.

The letters pointed out that the Patriarchate of Jerusalem has been in charge of this historic district located in the Holy City since the fifth century, but that unfortunately no response or clarification has reached the Palestinian leadership of the Patriarchate in this regard as the news has come from inside and outside Palestine. on the above ground, which is considered strategic due to its geographical location.

As a result, the Palestinian leadership sent the aforementioned letter, which stressed to the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem the importance of preserving the legal and historical status of the city, and that Jerusalem is subject to international law, international legitimacy and the Resolutions of Jerusalem. the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council, as Israel continues its aggressive efforts to Judaize Jerusalem, especially the Old City, and in particular that geographic location between Omar Ibn Al-Khattab Square, the Gate of Jaffa (Bab Al-Khalil) and the Jewish quarter.

The letter demanded urgent clarifications from the Supreme Patriarch of Armenia and his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ararat Mirzoyan, regarding what happened to the aforementioned plot of land, highlighting the dissatisfaction and resentment regarding the performance of the Armenian Patriarchate with the parishioners. and the exclusivity of its in recent years, which could negatively impact final status and status quo negotiations, as well as Jordan’s guardianship of the holy sites in East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian leadership has been in contact with all relevant authorities in this regard, in particular with Jordan and the Republic of Armenia, as well as with the heads of churches inside and outside the Holy Land. .
