CANBY – Services for Norma LaVonne Dovre, 88, of Canby, will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter. Visitations will be on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., with prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church. Interment will take place after the memorial service at the Wergeland Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, Sanford Canby Hospice – Neva’s Fund or The Connection of Canby. Houseman Funeral Home of Canby is responsible for the arrangements.

She died on Saturday June 19, 2021 at Sylvan Court in Canby.

Norma was born to Noman and LeVerna (Severson) Reishus on February 23, 1933 in Clarkfield. She spent her childhood years on the farm in the township of Normania. She graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1951. She spent a year at Concordia College in Moorhead. Norma met the love of her life, Ralph Dovre, at a 4-H softball tournament. They were married on June 6, 1953 at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in rural Cottonwood. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in June. His legacy continues through 6 children, 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren (to date).

Norma kept the books for the family farm, oversaw its growth and embraced new technologies, starting with the shoebox and ending with computerized records. Norma instilled a love of music in everyone around her, especially her children, and at Bethel Lutheran Church as a conductor, pianist and organist.

Norma was a leader of 4-H and a member of the Women’s Federation Club, the American Cancer Society and the SMAHC. She beautified the neighborhood with her flower gardens and volunteered as a master gardener. She loved to share her generosity and skills with her friends, family and the YMC Fair.

Norma enjoyed playing cards, reading books, square dancing, painting and quilting. Lots of great memories were created in a suburb crowded with 6 rambunctious kids towing a trailer across the United States and Canada. Ralph and Norma loved to travel and spent many winters in Bella Vista, Arkansas.

Norma fondly remembers her husband, Ralph Dovre, Canby; children: Diane (Ray) Radatz, Lewiston, Carol (Mark) Hruby, Garfield, Linda (Greg) Kockelman, Canby, Donald (Gloria) Dovre, Williamsburg, IA, Neil (Sandy) Dovre, Cottonwood, Jill (Kevin Hendrick) Dovre , Crescent City, California; 15 grandchildren: Corinne du Preez, Timothy Radatz, Laura Cleveland, Michelle Peterson, Leslie Elfering, Nicholas Kockelman, Anders, Nels, Jurgen, Inga Dovre, Noah, Jonah, Elijah Dovre, and Winona and Donovan Hendrick; and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Kaye (Sharon) Reishus and Terry (Sue) Reishus, her sister-in-law Marge Reishus and many nephews, nieces, cousins ​​and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Norman and LeVerna Reishus; brother, John Reishus; and his little sister, Marla Reishus.
