Google’s first point of sale obtains LEED Platinum certification

This summer, Google opened its first retail storefront in New York City. The landmark event is notable for a variety of reasons, perhaps the most notable being that the location was planned, designed and built with sustainability in mind. In fact, its sustainability measures have earned the space a LEED Platinum rating, the highest possible certification from the US Green Building Council.

Google has made headlines several times for its efforts to adopt environmentally friendly practices. As a business, Google has claimed to be carbon neutral since 2007 and has set itself the goal of being carbon-neutral by 2030. It may seem like a long time, but achieving that goal in a decade for a business of this size will require a lot of effort. clear vision. and constant change. In the short term, more immediate goals that will achieve a broader achievement include achieving zero waste to landfill certification by 2022, setting a deadline of 2025 to be plastic-free in all packaging, and incorporation of recyclable or renewable materials in products.

The development team built a life-size version of the retail space inside their Mountain View hangar; this allowed developers to physically assess the flow, look and customer experience of the layout. Architect Reddymade helped the team realize their vision of an interactive, warm, naturally lit and accessible space.

With a plan in place, the project focused on energy efficiency and material selection to help Google meet its sustainability goals. Inside the space, responsible original hickory veneer dresses the walls while the highly durable cork and wood furniture has been custom-made by a local craftsman. Rugs made from recycled materials and energy-efficient lighting light up the emphasis on eco-friendly interior design.

More than just a space to display the Pixel line of phones, Nest products, and other devices, the retail store is an example of a LEED Platinum design that is rare among retail stores around the world.

According to a press release, Google is “honored to have worked with the US Green Building Council in this process, and we can now share that the Google Store Chelsea is one of less than 215 retail spaces in the world. to have achieved a LEED Platinum Rating – the highest certification possible under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System.
