Corinne Smies Obituary (1922 – 2021) – Sheboygan Falls, WI
During World War II, Corinne accompanied her sister and brother-in-law to the Fort Ord military base in California, where she used her secretarial skills to work for an army colonel. There she met her husband, Donald, while he was waiting to ship to Guam. Since Donald was originally from Oostburg, Wisconsin, they reconnected after the war and got married in 1947. They moved to Oostburg, lived by Lake Michigan, and became life members of the Bethel Presbyterian Orthodox Church. Corinne has served her Lord in many areas of church life, teaching Sunday school and catechism classes, being involved in many different societies and in the ministry of Carrefour. Most of all, she served her family, friends, and her church through diligent prayer of intercession.
Corinne moved to Denver, Colorado at the age of 93 to be closer to her eldest daughter and her family. She loved living in Clermont Park Christian Living Community where she participated in many social activities, Bible studies, knitting for those in need, and following her favorite sports teams. She also liked to “go to the gym” every day for a 20 minute ride on the stationary bike.
She is predeceased by her 62-year-old husband Donald and her parents Martin and Katie (DenBoer) Dekker, sisters, Tannie (Chester) De Blaey and Ethel (Norman) Feringa, brother, John (Wilma) Dekker , her sister-in-law Ruth Dekker and her granddaughter, Rachel Bode Tucker.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia and her husband, Peter Holwerda; her daughter, Peggy, and her husband, Jim Bode; and his brother, Marvin Dekker. His life is celebrated and his death grieved by 5 grandchildren and spouses and 17 great grandchildren. She loved her family deeply and enjoyed family gatherings tremendously.
